What is MIRENA?

Mirena is a unique form of long-acting birth control.  It is a small, T-shaped frame made of soft, flexible plastic and is about the size of a quarter.  It is placed in the uterus by a trained health care professional during a routine office visit and continuously releases a very small amount of levonorgestrel (a hormone commonly found in the Pill).  Mirena prevents pregnancy for 5 full years or until removal.
